VLC is one of the best media players for Android TV and Fire TV: it plays network shares (SMB), DLNA, USB drives and virtually any codec — no transcoding server required. On Android TV/Google TV you install it from the Play Store; on Fire TV you sideload the official APK. This guide covers both paths plus the TV-specific settings that avoid the common black-screen and stutter issues.

Install steps
Step 1Step 1 — Install from the Play Store (Android TV / Google TV)
On the TV home screen, open the Play Store, search "VLC" and install the app by VideoLAN. Sign in with the same Google account used on your phone if the store asks.
Step 2Step 2 — Sideload on Fire TV
Enable "Apps from unknown sources" (Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options). Use the "Downloader" app (from the Amazon Appstore) to fetch the ARM64 APK from the official archive get.videolan.org/vlc-android, or send it from your phone via Send Files to TV.
Step 3Step 3 — Configure for TV playback
In VLC settings: enable "Hardware acceleration" → Automatic; Audio → Audio output → "AudioTrack" if sound drops; and in Video → Output, set "Android MediaCodec" if you see a black screen. Then browse your LAN: Home → Browse → Local network → SMB servers.
