VLC Equalizer & Audio Effects: Presets, Bass Boost, Compressor

VLC ships a full audio DSP suite hidden inside Tools > Effects and Filters. You can boost bass, brighten dialogue, widen the stereo image, or level out loudness — all in real time, without touching the file. This guide walks through the equalizer, the presets, and the audio effects that fix the most common sound complaints.

Step 1 — Open the effects panel

  1. Start playback, then press Ctrl+E (Cmd+E on macOS) or open Tools > Effects and Filters.

The Effects and Filters dialog opens on the Audio tab.

  2. Tick "Enable" in the Equalizer section to activate the 10-band graphic equalizer.

    The frequency sliders become active.

Step 2 — Use presets instead of guessing

PresetWhat it doesBest for
RockMid-scoop, boosted lows and highsMusic with guitars and drums
PopWide mid boost, slight low liftRadio-style music
ClassicalGentle low/high roll-off, even midsOrchestral and acoustic
VoiceFocused 1–4 kHz presence boostDialogue, podcasts, lectures
Bass boostStrong shelf below 150 HzSmall speakers, laptops
Full trebleAiry high-frequency liftDull-sounding recordings

Step 3 — Build a custom curve

  1. With the equalizer enabled, drag the sliders for the frequency ranges that bother you (e.g. lower 200 Hz if the sound is boomy, lift 3 kHz if dialogue is muffled).

The curve changes in real time.

  2. Use the "Preamp" slider to compensate: if your curve adds gain overall, drop the preamp by a similar amount to avoid clipping.

    Levels stay clean.

  3. Save your curve: pick "Save" (floppy icon) next to the preset list, or copy the preset file if you want it on another machine.

    Your preset is reusable.

Step 4 — The effects that fix real complaints

  • Spatializer — widens the stereo image; subtle at low levels, fake-sounding if pushed. Great for headphones on mono content.
  • Compressor — evens out loud and quiet passages; the single most useful effect for watching movies at night.
  • VU meter — shows peak levels; use it to confirm clipping before you adjust the preamp.
  • Normalization (in Preferences > Audio) — volume leveling between tracks in a playlist; pick a target like -18 LUFS for consistent loudness.

Frequently asked questions

Does the VLC equalizer work for all files?
Yes — it is applied during playback regardless of the container or codec. It also affects streams, but adds a tiny amount of CPU, negligible on modern hardware.
How do I reset the equalizer to flat?
Open the equalizer, choose the "Flat" preset (or reset all sliders to 0 dB), and set the preamp back to 0.
Can I make VLC louder than 100%?
Yes — Tools > Effects and Filters > Audio tab > Volume can go up to 200% (or 300% with the "Audio resampler" trick). Expect distortion at extreme settings.
Why does my equalizer reset after restarting VLC?
The "Enable" checkbox is off by default after restart unless you set it in Preferences > Audio > Effects. Check the box there so it persists.
