Install steps

Step 1Step 1 — Pick the right build

Nearly all modern PCs use the 64-bit (x64) build. Use ARM64 only on Snapdragon/ARM Windows laptops. The 32-bit build is legacy — skip it unless you run a 32-bit Windows.

Step 2Step 2 — Run the installer

Double-click the downloaded .exe. If SmartScreen warns "Windows protected your PC", click More info → Run anyway. The installer is digitally signed by VideoLAN. Accept the defaults — file associations and shortcuts are fine to keep.

Step 3Step 3 — Verify the install

Launch VLC from the Start menu, open Help → About VLC and confirm the version is 3.0.23. Play a test video and check both picture and sound. Optionally set VLC as the default player when prompted.

Frequently asked questions

SmartScreen blocked the installer — is it safe?
Yes. The official installer is signed by VideoLAN. Click More info → Run anyway. If the file size is not ~42 MB, re-download — a size mismatch indicates a tampered download.
Which version do I need — 64-bit or 32-bit?
64-bit for any PC from the last 10+ years. 32-bit is only needed for ancient hardware. ARM64 only for ARM Windows devices (Surface Pro X, some Snapdragon laptops).
Do I need to uninstall the old VLC first?
No. Installing over an existing version preserves your settings and playlists. Do a clean uninstall only when troubleshooting a broken install.
Install fails with a "file in use" error
Close every VLC window, then end any leftover process: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find vlc.exe, End task. Also close the media tray / mini player if enabled, then retry.
VLC is not available in the Microsoft Store version I want
The Store version is a sandboxed build maintained separately. For the classic full VLC, always use the videolan.org installer linked on this page.
