VLC Keyboard Shortcuts: The Complete Cheat Sheet

Beginner Last updated: Applies to: Windows / Linux · VLC 3.0.x (macOS: Cmd instead of Ctrl)

VLC is designed for keyboard control — almost every action has a hotkey, and most of them are single keys that work instantly. Learning a dozen shortcuts turns fiddly menu-clicking into one-handed playback. Here is the cheat sheet you will actually use, plus how to remap anything.

Step 1 — Set your snapshot directory

  1. Tools > Preferences > Video > "Directory for video snapshots" — pick a folder you can find.

    Snapshots are saved there.

  2. Press S during playback to test.

A PNG appears in the folder.

Step 2 — Remap any hotkey

  1. Tools > Preferences > Hotkeys (or "All" > Interface > Hotkeys settings).

    The full hotkey list opens.

  2. Double-click an action and press the new key combo — e.g. bind "Play/pause" to the spacebar alternative "P".

    The binding is updated.

  3. Avoid combos already in use; VLC warns on conflicts in most builds.

    No conflicting bindings remain.

  4. Save — the new bindings apply immediately.

    Your custom layout works.

Hidden gems worth knowing

  • Ctrl+R — open Convert/Save instantly (the fastest path to recording/converting).
  • Ctrl+D — open the Disc dialog for DVDs.
  • Ctrl+N — open a network stream.
  • Ctrl+E — effects panel, the shortcut for 80% of picture/sound complaints.
  • Alt+P — jump back to the last played position of a file (resume).
  • Q — quit VLC with the media playing (resumes next time with Alt+P).
  • Shift+M — mute. Ctrl+P — preferences, always useful.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some shortcuts not work for me?
Check for conflicting global apps (e.g. media keys), and verify you are not in a text field. Also confirm your VLC version — a few hotkeys changed across 2.x and 3.0.
Can I make VLC pause when I press the spacebar in fullscreen?
Space works in fullscreen by default. If not, remap Play/pause in Hotkeys to Space + a secondary key.
Where are VLC screenshots saved?
The folder set in Preferences > Video > "Directory for video snapshots" — default is the Pictures folder on Windows/macOS and the home directory on Linux.
How do I adjust audio/subtitle delay quickly?
G/H shift subtitles by 50 ms per press; K/J shift audio. Combined with Alt for 500 ms jumps in newer builds, you can sync any file in seconds.
