VLC Subtitle Guide: Auto-Load, Style, Sync & More

Beginner Last updated: Applies to: All platforms · VLC 3.0.x

Subtitles are where most VLC users hit their first wall — not because VLC is bad at them, but because the settings are spread across several menus. This guide consolidates everything: automatic loading, styling, encoding, synchronization shortcuts and forced/embedded tracks. After this, subtitles will "just work".

Make external subtitles load automatically

  1. Keep the .srt/.ass file in the same folder as the video with the exact same base name: movie.mp4 + movie.srt.

    VLC auto-loads the subtitle.

  2. Tools > Preferences > Subtitles: ensure "Autodetect subtitle files" is on, and set "Subtitle language" to your preference.

    Auto-detection is configured.

  3. Restart VLC and open the video.

    Subtitles appear without manual action.

NoteFiles like movie.eng.srt need the "English" pattern configured in the subtitle preferences — or simply rename to movie.srt.

Style subtitles: font, size and color

  1. Tools > Preferences > Subtitles / OSD.

    Subtitle style settings open.

  2. Set the font (e.g. Arial), font size (scale up to ~36 for TV viewing), and color.

    Subtitles are readable.

  3. For ASS files, keep "Force subtitle style" at default so embedded styles apply; disable it only if styling is broken.

    ASS styling renders as authored.

Fix subtitle sync instantly

  • J — make subtitles appear later (delay +50 ms).
  • K — make subtitles appear earlier (advance 50 ms).
  • G — audio earlier (audio/video sync).
  • H — audio later.
  • For precise adjustment: right-click > Subtitle > Synchronization, then set the exact offset in ms.

Handle forced and embedded tracks

  1. Right-click the video > Subtitle > Sub Track — pick the track (forced tracks are usually labeled).

    The right track is selected.

  2. MKV files with multiple tracks: verify the selection in Tools > Track Synchronization.

    The active track is confirmed.

  3. For the movie’s "forced" subs (foreign-language dialogue only), choose the track named "forced".

Forced dialogue shows, full subs do not.

Frequently asked questions

Why don’t my subtitles load automatically in VLC?
The filename must match the video exactly and sit in the same folder. Check "Autodetect subtitle files" in preferences, then restart VLC.
How do I change the subtitle font size in VLC?
Tools > Preferences > Subtitles/OSD > "Font size" (or scale). Bigger values for TV viewing.
Can VLC download subtitles automatically?
Not built-in; the OpenSubtitles Lua extension (via addons.videolan.org) adds that. See our subtitle tools plugin guide.
ASS subtitles look wrong in VLC — why?
ASS styling depends on fonts present on the system. Install the fonts the file references, or disable "Force subtitle style" handling issues.
How do I make subtitles default to a specific track?
Set "Subtitle language" in preferences to your language code — VLC prefers that track in embedded files.
