VLC Playlist Management: Organize Media Like a Pro

Beginner Last updated: Applies to: All platforms · VLC 3.0.x

VLC’s playlist system is simple once you know the three concepts: the current playlist (a session list), saved playlists (.xspf files), and the media library (a database of your folders). This guide shows how each works and how to keep hundreds of files organized without drama.

The playlist panel

  1. Toggle the playlist panel with Ctrl+L (View > Playlist).

    The playlist sidebar appears.

  2. Drag files into it, or use Media > Open File with "Enqueue" (default) to add without interrupting playback.

    Files are added.

  3. Right-click items for remove, move, sort and repeat options.

    The playlist is managed.

Save and reuse playlists

  1. Right-click the playlist > Save Playlist to File… (or Media > Save Playlist).

    An .xspf file is saved.

  2. Open it later via Media > Open File — VLC restores the list.

    The playlist loads.

  3. Tip: .xspf files are plain XML — you can edit them in any text editor or generate them with scripts.

    Playlists are portable.

NoteSaved playlists store absolute paths; moving the media files breaks them. Keep media folders stable or regenerate playlists after moves.

Use the media library for browsing

  1. View > Media Library (or the "Library" tab in the sidebar).

    The library opens.

  2. Right-click in the library > "Add Folder" and point VLC at your media folders.

    Folders are indexed.

  3. Browse by Artist/Album (audio) or Video categories; double-click to play.

    Media is browsable.

NoteThe library is a lightweight index, not a music manager like iTunes — no auto-tagging, no art fetching. For heavy libraries, pair VLC with a tagger tool.

Pro tips

  • Repeat a playlist: Playback > Repeat All (or the repeat icon).
  • Play next: right-click an item > "Play Next" for one-off queuing.
  • Sort by anything: click the column headers in playlist view (name, duration, path).
  • Bookmarks: Ctrl+B to bookmark positions inside a single file — great for long movies.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save a VLC playlist?
Right-click the playlist > Save Playlist to File. VLC saves .xspf (and .m3u on request in some builds).
Why did my playlist disappear?
The current playlist is session-only by default. If you enabled "Use VLC as the default media library" behavior, media library contents persist — but ad-hoc lists do not.
Can VLC play a folder recursively?
Yes — Media > Open Folder opens the folder as a playlist, including subfolders.
Does VLC support M3U playlists?
Yes, both reading and writing M3U/M3U8 and XSPF.
Playlist order changes when I restart VLC — why?
Without "resume" settings, VLC rebuilds the list in file order. Use saved playlists for stable ordering.
